Design and Technology
A Hoyle Court Designer
“In order to be irreplaceable, one must always be different”.
At Hoyle Court Primary School, it is our vision to inspire children to develop a passion for design and to prepare children to deal with tomorrow’s rapidly changing world. We have established a learning environment where children feel secure and creative risk-taking and problem solving is encouraged.
Our curriculum is rich, varied and inclusive to give all children a chance to be creative and achieve no matter what their learning ability. Through our Design and Technology curriculum, children can solve problems both as individuals and as members of a team. We encourage children to use their creativity and imagination to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems. We provide opportunities to analyse a situation and enable the children to consider their own and others’ needs and wants. Vitally, we then teach them simple construction skills to make a range of products. We ensure our children are provided with the skills to reflect and evaluate their own work as well as present and past design technology. We enable our children to learn the principles of nutrition, healthy eating and how to cook. Our children develop an understanding of health and safety and protective measures whilst creating a product of a high standard.
Design Technology lessons are practical and engaging. Children are encouraged to take risks and that mistakes help us to improve. Children are given the opportunity to explore design in their locality through the study of canals and Saltaire. Links are also made to local designers and engineers such as John Smeaton the “father of engineers”, Donald Bailey and Sir George Cayley.
We provide opportunities so that when children leave us they have the knowledge and confidence to ‘think outside the box’ and have acquired the skills to become informed future consumers and potential innovators.
